BC Ministry of Forests improves forest fire response

In partnership with GeoConnections, the British Columbia Forest Service is building an emergency management application for its Protection Program and for the Provincial Emergency Program. This project will leverage common web services from the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure to enable the registration and display of emergency resources such as heavy equipment and specialized personnel.

Currently, organizations often track resources in disparate ways, and provide little or no geospatial information and real-time status reporting. In addition, there is generally little or no inter-agency and supplier communication.

The Resource Management for Emergency Management (RMER) project will be a leading example of how improvements in situational awareness and coordination of emergency resources between jurisdictions can be enabled through the CGDI, ultimately leading to more effective and efficient emergency response.
