GeoBC First Nations Gateway
This project will create the First Nations GeoBC Gateway, a single access point for provincial land and resource information, data, and tools. This gateway will be tailored to meet the specific needs of First Nations for land use planning, treaty negotiations, and land and resource applications, among others.
The gateway will make it easier for BC First Nations to access geospatial information regardless of their technical knowledge.
Currently, the land and resource information that First Nations need often comes from several sources and in formats unsuited for non-technical users. As a result, getting the land and resource information required for First Nation decision making can be time consuming and frustrating.
To be hosted on the BC government website, the gateway will enable First Nations to access, gather, merge, and analyze data from one source using their Web browsers. The gateway will include existing data and new data. All new data will be published according to Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) standards while existing data will be converted to CGDI standards.
The gateway is expected to help First Nations participate in government-to-government processes more efficiently and responsively than they can today, and improve decision making. The gateway will not only benefit BC's First Nations, but also improve a range of services provided through GeoBC-BC's online geographic Website.
