Decentralized Infrastructure for Disseminating Geospatial Data on the Internet

This project will establish a decentralized service for disseminating geospatial data over the Internet (inventoried within the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure [CGDI]) through a new portal called "GEOREX". This decentralized service will also give users transparent access to geospatial databases hosted by the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de la Métropole, Hydro-Québec and the Commission des services électriques de la Ville de Montréal. For data providers, the new service will mean maintaining control over their own distribution and pricing policies, while giving users access to different sources of data through a common Internet window. For data users, the GEOREX portal will provide easy access to up-to-date, reliable information and will facilitate data exchanges. Once GEOREX is in place and the initial data providers are well established, there is potential for involving other data publishers, including other public utilities and government ministries. By making diverse data more accessible, this new service will enable professionals from public utilities, municipalities and ministries to use geospatial data in their decision-making processes.
