Search and Rescue Resource Data Module
As part of an ongoing project to automate Canadian search and rescue (SAR) centres, this module will provide efficient access to, and maintenance of, data on SAR personnel and resources. Currently, SAR controllers spend valuable time during emergencies looking up data using manual methods and/or separate applications. The SAR Resource Data Module (RDM) will provide controllers with access to up-to-date information on SAR resources maintained within a national database and within their local databases. Access will be facilitated through a user-interface integrated within their current SAR Mission Management System (SMMS).The RDM will be accessible through the Internet (non-Department of National Defence SAR users) and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Intranet and will be updated in near real-time. Even SAR resources without Internet access will be able to enter data regarding their status, since the RDM will incorporate telephone technology. The RDM database will contain information (spatial and descriptive) enabling users to locate the available resources (personnel and equipment) using either spatial or textual searches. The RDM will interact with other existing systems to extract, or provide access to, resource data. It will be an important addition to the Canadian SMMS and to international SAR centres suite of applications, and it will enhance Canada's position as a global leader in SAR technology.
